Chatbots are a promising resource for giving students feedback and helping them deploy metacognitive strategies in their learning processes. In this study we worked with a sample of 57 university students, 42 undergraduate and 15 Master’s degree students in Health Sciences. In addition, we examined whether the frequency of chatbot use depended on students’ metacognitive strategies.

Then, the problem is related to which platform to use to develop a chatbot in the educational domain. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to compare the main natural language understanding (NLU) engines and determine which could perform better in the educational domain. In this way, researchers can make more justified decisions about which NLU engine to use to develop an educational chatbot. Besides, in this study, six NLU platforms were compared and performance was measured with the F1 score.

Gathering feedback about learning materials with AI chatbot

For instance, Winkler and Söllner (2018) classified the chatbots as flow or AI-based, while Cunningham-Nelson et al. (2019) categorized the chatbots as machine-learning-based or dataset-based. In this study, we carefully look at the interaction style in terms of who is in control of the conversation, i.e., the chatbot or the user. Only four studies (Hwang & Chang, 2021; Wollny et al., 2021; Smutny & Schreiberova, 2020; Winkler & Söllner, 2018) examined the field of application. None of the studies discussed the platforms on which the chatbots run, while only one study (Wollny et al., 2021) analyzed the educational roles the chatbots are playing.

Table 10 shows the details of the experiments the surveyed studies had used. User-driven conversations are powered by AI and thus allow for a flexible dialogue as the user chooses the types of questions they ask and thus can deviate from the chatbot’s script.
